A bearded man carrying two rams c.1500-50
Black chalk with brown wash | 39.4 x 52.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 905477
-
A drawing of a bearded man carrying a ram over his shoulder and another over his arm, walking towards a boat.
Popham (P&W, 1949) attributed the drawing to Niccolò dell'Abbate, suggesting it might be a fragment of a tapestry cartoon, by comparison with a drawing in the British Museum (SL,5214.298). Hugo Chapman attributed the drawing to Amico Aspertini in 2002 (note on former mount), an attribution that has since been generally accepted (eg Aspertini exh. 2008).
The top corners are cut, indicative of an early English provenance, and the sheet is inscribed on the verso by the seventeenth-century dealer William Gibson: 'Polidoro da Carrava[cco?] 2.3.'Provenance
William Gibson (his inscription, verso); thus probably acquired by Charles II
