After Polidoro da Caravaggio (c. 1499-1543)
Camillus about to add his sword to the tribute c.1550
-
A group of soldiers around a table laden with precious vessels; Camillus, right, about to add his sword to the tribute paid by the Romans to the victorious Gauls under Brennus. Copied from a chiaroscuro frescoed by Polidoro on a house in Montecavallo, near Sant'Agata, Rome (no longer extant), as described by Vasari (Milanesi V, p. 146).
Popham (1949) suggested Girolamo da Carpi as the copyist; Ravelli (1978) concurred, with reference to a drawing at Christ Church, Oxford (inv. 1584). -
