Attributed to Pirro Ligorio (c. 1513-1583)
An unidentified scene from Roman history 1525 - 1600
-
A drawing of a Roman general, accompanied by a king and soldiers, pointing towards a woman and two boys.
The attribution of this weak drawing is uncertain. It was earlier attributed by J.C. Robinson to Pellegrino Tibaldi (note on mount). Popham (in P&W) suggested Pirro Ligorio, on grounds of style, possibly copying a façade decoration by Polidoro da Caravaggio. Frederick Antal suggested Andrea Boscoli (review of P&W, in Burlington Magazine, 1951, p.32).
Provenance
Presumably Royal Collection by c.1800, but not identifiable in George III's Inventory A.
