The head of a monk 1575 - 1600
Black and red chalk on blue paper, with touches of white | 22.2 x 17.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 905409
-
A drawing of the head and shoulders of a monk, in left profile.
The drawing may be by Carletto Caliari, as its style resembles that of a portrait of Paolo Paruta in the British Museum (1946,0713.23), probably by Carletto; the BM drawing it is inscribed 'Carleto' in the Windsor 'Deceptive Hand', though in that case the ascription seems to be correct. The Tietzes (Drawings of the Venetian Painters, 1944, no. 210) attributed the BM drawing to Leandro Bassano; a drawing also of Paolo Paruta in Dublin has likewise been disputed between Carletto and Leandro.Provenance
From an album listed in George III's Inventory A, p. 19, 'Teste di Diversi Maestri. Tom. I', among '52 Of the School of the Carracci'.
