The head of a youth c.1600-25
Black and red chalks | 21.0 x 16.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 905386

After? Giuseppe Cesari, Cavaliere d'Arpino (1568-1640)
Head of a boy in profile c.1600-25
-
The head of a youth, in right profile. The red and black chalk technique is typical of Federico Zuccaro and his followers, including Giuseppe Cesari, Cavaliere d'Arpino, but this is a weak drawing and Popham (in P&W) proposed that the sheet is a copy after Arpino. Herwarth Röttgen (note on mount) rejected any connection with Arpino.
Provenance
Probably listed in George III's Inventory A (c. 1800-20), 'Diversi Maestri Antichi' / TOM VI (c. 1802), p. 19: 'Testi di Diversi Maestri'
