Pier Leone Ghezzi (1674-1755)
A study for the head of God The Father
-
A study for the head of God The Father. Inscribed by the artist: Il P. eterno dio dipinto dal Giuseppe Ghezzi nella chiesa nostra di Roma et io Cavre. Ghezzi lo disegnai di mia memoria. The phrase 'la chiesa nostra' should refer to the Marchigian church of S Salvatore in Lauro, Rome, which was restored by Giuseppe Ghezzi and for which he painted a Pieta. This does not, however, contain a figure of God the Father, and Pier Leone Ghezzi, who admits he made the drawing from memory, must have been mistaken in thinking that it was after this work. Actually the head strongly resembles that of God the Father in Cortona's altarpiece of The Holy Trinity in St Peters.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani
