A study of the head of a youth, looking to the right. Laid down on a George III folio sheet with wash-line border. Close in manner to Annibale Carracci, and inscribed on the George III mount 'Di Badalocchio', but the handling of the chalk looks significantly later (post-Guercino?). Another study of a head on the verso of the sheet, in pen and ink, can be discerned when the sheet is held to the light. Babette Bohn (file note, 1989) notes another drawing of the same youth, also attributed to Badalocchio, in the Stanford Art Museum, CA.
Provenance
Probably purchased by Richard Dalton on behalf of George III c.1760; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inventory A, p. 19, Teste di Diversi Maestri, one of '52. Of the School of Carracci.')
