The Annunciation c.1525-50
-
A drawing of the Annunciation, with God the Father and two putti above. Inscribed at lower left in an eighteenth-century hand: 'Gian Giuseppe del Sole', though the drawing is probably of the second quarter of the sixteenth century. Popham suggested it is by a Bolognese follower of Raphael; P. Pouncey (recorded in P&W) proposed an attribution to Bagnacavallo, 'with whose type of face that of the Virgin perfectly agrees … but in the absence of any well-authenticated drawing by this artist ... the attribution … must remain hypothetical'.
