-
A drawing of three men armed with stones: on the left the bearded sculptor, il Bruttobuono, stands poised with his fist clenched ready to do battle with a man who stoops to pick up a stone. Behind him another figure is about to throw a stone. They both use garments as makeshift shields. This is a copy after figures in Les Gourmeurs, depicting a street fight between supporters of the French and Spanish factions in Rome. The painting was formerly in the collection of Lucien Bonaparte. See also RCIN 902340.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 82: 'Study for the riots at Bologna, red chalk')
