Black chalk and brown wash | 37.3 x 25.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 905295

After Francesco Albani (Bologna 1578-Bologna 1660)
905295.jpg c. 1611-1700
-
A drawing of a winged figure, asleep, seated with two sleeping putti in her arms; an owl to the left, and smaller sleeping figures below. Kurz catalogued the sheet as a study by Albani, for his fresco in a pendentive of the loggia of the Palazzo Verospi (now Credito Italiano) in Rome, commissioned by Ferrante Verospi c.1610-15 (see C. Puglisi, Francesco Albani, Yale 1999, pp. 125-8). The drawing is however a copy after that fresco (Puglisi, loc. cit., with other refs.); the technique of linear black chalk and brown wash might suggest Giovanni Antonio or Elisabetta Sirani, but the style is more angular than theirs.
Provenance
Probably purchased by Richard Dalton on behalf of George III c.1760, as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inventory A, p. 82: Francesco Albano. C, Cignani &c., p. 1, 'Angels & 2 Children, emblem of an Owl, two small figures below, / black chalk & bistre wash')
