The Visitation c.1585-1650
Pen and ink and brown wash, white heightening, over black chalk, on blue paper | 39.6 x 28.3 cm (whole object) | RCIN 905241

The composition corresponds in all respects with Barocci's painting in Santa Maria in Vallicella (the Chiesa Nuova) in Rome, painted 1583-86. Popham (in P&W 1949) catalogued the drawing as a copy after the painting, but the technique and chiaroscuro of the drawing suggest that it is rather a copy after Barocci's lost modello for that painting, one step beyond the surviving compositional study in the National Gallery of Scotland (RSA 216).
Provenance
Listed in George III’s ‘Inventory A’, c.1800-20, p. 124, ‘Frederico Barocci’, ‘The Visitation of the V.M. and Elizabeth’
