The head of woman c.1575
Black and coloured chalks on discoloured green-grey paper | 22.2 x 18.5 cm, the corners made up (whole object) | RCIN 905230
-
A drawing of the head of a woman looking down to the left: a study for the head of the Virgin in the Madonna del Gatto in the National Gallery, London. There is also a slight sketch of a head at lower left.
Cut irregularly, and the corners made up; the paper discoloured by exposure to light, and what seems to be damage from water running down the surface, suggesting the drawing was framed and hung at an early date.
Stamped with the eight-pointed star associated with Nicholas Lanier (Lugt 2885), and inscribed in an ornate seventeenth-century hand at lower right, 'Federico Barocho'.Provenance
In the collection of Nicholas Lanier (1588-1666; ?his star mark, Lugt 2885); thus probably acquired by Charles II. Listed in George III’s ‘Inventory A’, c.1800-20, p. 124, ‘Frederico Barocci’, among ‘13. Of Study’s of Heads’ (905222-34)
