Federico Barocci (Urbino c. 1535-Urbino 1612)
The head of a woman c.1600-1610
-
A drawing of the head of a woman, looking down, three-quarters right.
Popham (in P&W 1949) had suggested that this was a study for the Madonna del Gatto in the National Gallery, London, while noting that it is 'singularly like that of the Virgin in the Mengarini Collection, Rome, though reversed'. H. Olsen (Federico Barocci, 1962, p. 226) suggested it was a study for the Madonna di Santa Lucia, executed by assistants c.1590, in the Louvre. D.Scrase (exh. Federico Barocci, Cambridge 2006, no. 79) proposed instead a study for the Madonna Albani, Barocci's last painting, left unfinished when he died in 1612 (now in the collection of the Banca Nazionale del Lavoro).Provenance
Listed in George III’s ‘Inventory A’, c.1800-20, p. 124, ‘Frederico Barocci’, among ‘13. Of Study’s of Heads’ (905222-34)
