Federico Barocci (Urbino c. 1535-Urbino 1612)
The head of a man with his eyes closed c.1600

-
A drawing of the head of a bearded man, his eyes closed and possibly on his death bed. Popham (in P&W 1949) noted a similarity to the features of Duke Federico della Rovere, and suggested it might be a portrait of the duke's brother, Cardinal Giuliano della Rovere, who died in 1578. D. Scrase (exh. Federico Barrocci, Cambridge 2006, no. 78) suggested it might be a study for the head of Christ in Barocci's unfinished painting of the Lamentation now in the Cappella Farnese, Bologna.
Provenance
Listed in George III’s ‘Inventory A’, c.1800-20, p. 124, ‘Frederico Barocci’, among ‘13. Of Study’s of Heads’ (905222-34)
