Federico Barocci (Urbino c. 1535-Urbino 1612)
The head of a man c.1575
-
A drawing of the head and shoulders of a young, bearded man, looking down to the left. Possibly a study for a man distributing alms in the modello for the Madonna del Popolo, formerly at Chatsworth (the figure does not appear in the painting itself, in the Uffizi). A further slight study of the nose and lips is to lower left. The head has been roughly silhouetted in a tattered fashion, and skilfully restored at an early date to a full sheet.
Inscribed at lower left: 'Barocci'.Provenance
George III’s ‘Inventory A’, c.1800-20, p. 124, ‘Frederico Barocci’, among ‘13. Of Study’s of Heads’ (905222-34)
