Popham noted 'the style suggests a possible connection with Lodovico Carracci', and indeed the pen style and the types of the Virtues are characteristic of Ludovico. Catherine Johnston pointed out (recorded in B(M)) that the composition corresponds exactly with one described in detail by C.C. Malvasia (Felsina Pittrice, 1678, I, p. 86) and engraved by Oliviero Gatti in 1606, though the identity of the cardinal is not known. -
