A scene with fantastical beasts 1575 - 1600
Red chalk | 19.6 x 30.3 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 905208
-
A dense scene of rocks and foliage, populated by a lion and various fantastical beasts; a wildman wielding a club at upper right.
Popham (in P&W): 'Though I have thought of Ligozzi as possibly the draughtsman (and it is not always as easy as it might appear to distinguish between the two) I think it is rather the work of Orsi'. F. Antal suggested instead Andrea Boscoli (review of P&W in Burlington Magazine, 1951, p. 32). But the dense rich red chalk seems typical of the drawings of Camillo Procaccini, and P. Vanoli (correspondence, 2006) suggested a possible connection with Procaccini's frescoes in Villa Visconti, Lainate, Milan (c.1588-9).Provenance
From an album Listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800, p. 16, ‘Diversi Maestri Antichi’, Tom. IV, ‘Pages 52. Mostly of the old Italian School.’
