-
A drawing after Guido Reni's so-called bust of Seneca, now in Museo Nazionale di Palazzo Venezia, Rome.
The drawing is unusually bold for such a copy. Popham's initial attributions (1940s; recorded in an inscription on the reverse of the mount) were to Tintoretto and then to Rubens; neither is plausible. Blunt suggested Venetian, c.1600 (also in an inscription on the reverse of the mount). The apparent use of oiled charcoal would suggest (unsurprisingly) a Bolognese artist of the seventeenth century, but the rendering of the surface is more tactile than seen in Bolognese drawings of that period.
The drawing does not appear in any of the Windsor catalogues. -
