School of Bartolomeo Passarotti (1529-92)
The head of a man 1575 - 1625
-
A drawing of the head of a bearded man in a fantastical headdress, looking to the right.
Popham (in P&W) attributed the drawing to the school of Passarotti. Höper (Bartolomeo Passarotti, 1987) accepted it as an autograph study for the head of a priest in the centre background of Passarotti's painting of the Presentation in the Temple, the high altarpiece of the church of Santa Maria dei Guarini (di San Giobbe), Bologna, c.1590. While there is a resemblance, the identification is not convincing, and the present drawing has a stiffness and artificiality that is not found in Passarotti's autograph studies.Provenance
From an album listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800, p. 16, ‘Diversi Maestri Antichi’, Tom. III, ‘Containing the old Italian Masters, and many old Flemish ones.’
