Alessandro Allori (Florence 1535-Florence 1607)
A Muse directing a Poet to the Fountain of Mount Helicon c.1570-80
-
A drawing of a bearded figure ascending steps, one Muse pointing to Mount Helicon while another crowns him with laurel. At lower left, a river god with an urn and a lion; top left, a large fountain bowl with Pegasus in the waters and figures seated on its steps; top right, figures (presumably the Muses) among trees. Squared in black chalk.
The drawing was earlier attributed to Federico Zuccaro. Popham (in P&W 1949) recognised Allori's style, without being able to identify the purpose of the drawing; he noted that Allori had designed allegories of Poetry for the temporary arches for the wedding of Duke Cosimo de' Medici and Joanna of Austria in 1565, though the descriptions of those decorations do not fit the present drawing. -
