Judith and Holofernes
Pen and brown wash, heightened with body-colour, on dark grey paper | 21.5 x 33.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 905141

Attributed to Angelo Caroselli (1585-1652)
Judith and Holofernes
-
A drawing of Judith, standing in the centre of the composition, with her head turned in left profile, looking at the body of Holofernes. She holds a sword in her right hand, and places his head in the sack held open by the old woman on the right. Although no drawings by Caroselli are known, the heaviness of the forms in this unusual work is similar to those in paintings ascribed with varying degrees of certainty to him.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 16: 'Tom. III. Pages 52 Containing the old Italian Masters, and Many old Flemish ones')
