The Virgin and Child with musician angels and St Apollonia
Pen and ink and brown wash over red chalk, squared in red chalk | 25.5 x 19.0 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 905131
-
The seated Virgin and Child on an altar, with St. Apollonia kneeling before them. Corresponds with an altarpiece in San Prospero, Reggio Emilia, given to Denys Calvaert by Malvasia but now attributed to the youthful Lorenzo Franchi (information from Stefano l'Occaso, 2014). The painting and drawing however seem to be by different hands - is this a copy after the altarpiece (or a design for it)? Antal (review of Popham and Wilde) and Pouncey (BM desk copy of P&W) had given the drawing to Brusasorci.
