The Marriage of St Cecilia to St Valerian c.1560-70
-
A drawing of St Cecilia, left, with two women, St Valerian, right, with two other soldiers, a priest at the centre; squared for transfer. F. Antal (recorded in P&W 1949) noted that the drawing is a study for an oval compartment in the vault of an aisle of San Sigismondo, Cremona, attributed to Bernardino Campi (cf. ithe stylistic similarity to Campi's signed drawing RCIN 990131). The altarpiece of the adjacent chapel is dated 1566, which might give an approximate date for the drawing and corresponding painting.
Giulio Bora (Mostra di disegni cremonese del '500: I segni dell'arte, Cremona 1997, no. 110) attributed both drawing and painting to Carlo Urbino on grounds of style. -
