A prophet c.1525-50
Pen and ink with grey wash and white heightening, on brown prepared paper | 11.6 x 20.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 905069

Attributed to Benvenuto di Pietro Tisi, called Garofalo (1476-Ferrara 1559)
A prophet c.1525-50
-
A drawing of a bearded man seated on the ground, holding a large book, within a lunette.
The attribution of the drawing to Garofalo was due to Philip Pouncey (recorded in P&W 1949), who noted the resemblance of style and disposition of a figure in a lunette to a drawing in the Louvre (inv. 9070), a study for a signed fresco of 1544 in the Pinacoteca, Ferrara. A note in the British Museum's desk copy of P&W also notes the similarities to a drawing in the Uffizi (12921-F, as Titian, but placed under Garofalo in the Gernsheim photographic series, no. 22684; for that drawing see Disegni Emiliani del Rinascimento, no. 9, and Disegni del Rinascimento in Valpadana, no. 94). -
