The Adoration of the Magi 1525-65
Pen and ink, grey wash, white heightening, on yellow-toned paper | 31.3 x 24.2 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 905057
-
A drawing of the Holy Family in a ruined classical temple/stable, right, with three Magi offering gifts, left; distant landscape.
The drawing was classed by Popham (in P&W), along with 905085, as 'by a very provincial North Italian'. Francesco Bologna proposed an attribution to Marco Cardisco (Roviale Spagnuolo e la pittura napoletana del Cinquecento, Naples 1958, p. 78); the attribution to Cardisco's pupil Pietro Negroni follows with that of 905085 (qv).Provenance
From an album listed in George III's Inventory A, c.1800, p. 16, ‘Diversi Maestri Antichi’, Tom. I, ‘Pages 56 … Containing old Masters of the Florentine, Roman and Lombard School, not of the first Class, but many are mentioned by Giorgio Vasari’.
