The appearance of the Archangel Michael to Pope Gregory the Great on the Castel Sant'Angelo c.1540-1600
-
A drawing of the appearance of the Archangel Michael to Pope Gregory the Great at Castel Sant'Angelo. The drawing is a repetition of one in the Uffizi (Santarelli 1240); Popham (in P&W) tentatively accepted both as autograph, but the handling of the present sheet is indicative of a copy.
C. Brandi (Bollettino d'Arte, III, 1933-4, p. 368) suggested that the Uffizi drawing is a design for a lost predella of the painting of St Michael Subduing the Rebel Angels in the Church of the Carmine at Siena, painted some time after 1538. -
