-
A drawing of Neptune standing in a scallop-shaped chariot drawn through the waves by two horses, with two dolphins at his feet.
Neptune was a favourite subject of Farinati, appearing in several of his drawings and paintings - see also the verso of this sheet, and RCINs 905009, 904993 and 904983, though none of these can be related to a larger project. The horse to the left of the sheet is repeated in a drawing by Farinati of the Triumph of Galatea, dated 1586, formerly in the Michel Gaud collection, and is found in a drawing of Neptune and Amphitrite in a drawing formerly on the art market (Colnaghi, 1996 catalogue, no. 15), attributed to an unidentified Veronese artist. On the verso of the sheet is a study of Neptune standing facing right, holding the staff of his trident, a single dolphin at his feet.
The sheet is inscribed by the art dealer William Gibson (1644/5-1702), 'P. Farinato 4...’ (trimmed). The Royal Collection holds forty-seven sheets by Farinati and his followers. It is probable that most, if not all, were acquired during the reign of Charles II. A list of albums at Kensington Palace in 1727 includes one volume of drawings by Farinati and his followers, probably containing RCINs 904973–905026.
Provenance
William Gibson (his inscription and price mark); probably acquired by Charles II. Listed in George III's 'Inventory A,' c.1800-20, p. 117, 'Paolo Farinati'
