Paolo Farinati (1524-1606)
Bellona c.1575-1600
-
A drawing of Bellona, the ancient Roman goddess of war, seated, surrounded by trophies of arms and armour, a flag draped across her shoulder. Traces of an ink border on right hand edge; William Gibson's inscription, almost entirely obscured, on the verso: ‘…ato’; stamped at lower centre edge with a George V blind stamp. The light white chalk squaring indicates that the sheet was prepared for transfer, though no related fresco is known.
William Gibson's inscriptions and characteristic price codes can be found on 14 of the 47 drawings by Paolo Farinati and his followers in the Royal Collection. It is probable that most, if not all, of the sheets by Farinati and his followers in the Royal Collection were acquired during the reign of Charles II. A list of albums at Kensington Palace in 1727 includes one volume of drawings by Farinati and his followers, probably containing RCINs 904973–905026.
