The Assumption of the Virgin c.1575-1600
Blue paper, black chalk, pen and ink, grey wash, white heightening; squared in black chalk | 47.5 x 28.5 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 904986
-
A drawing of the Virgin ascending to heaven amidst clouds and cherubim, the apostles gathered around her empty tomb with gestures of astonishment; cut to an arch, and the upper corners infilled.
The drawing comes from the Farinati sequence but is not by that artist; Popham (in P&W) proposed an attribution to Trotti (Malosso), noting a study for the lower half of the composition in Berlin (ex-Paccetti collection). H. Chapman (note on mount, 2002) suggests Denys Calvaert; for a painting of the subject by that artist see RCIN 405738, though the compositions are not particularly close.Provenance
Nicholas Lanier (?his eight-pointed star stamp, Lugt 2885); thus presumably acquired by Charles II.
