Paolo Farinati (1524-1606)
An antique sacrifice c.1570-75?
-
A brush drawing of an antique sacrifice, a man slaughtering an ox by an altar to the left, another man with a large bowl and a ram to the right, with many figures playing musical instruments in the background. The figures of the ox and sacrificant are found repeated in the fresco cycle of Sts Nazaro and Celso, painted by Farinati in 1571 in the choir of SS Nazaro e Celso in Verona, and the drawing may therefore be close in date, though Farinati reused figures and compositions throughout his career.
Inscribed in ink at lower left, in the 'Reliable Windsor Venetian hand', ‘Paolo Farinata’. Stamped very faintly to left of lower centre with the eight-point star mark associated with Nicholas Lanier (Lugt 2885), and in the lower right with a George V blind stamp.Provenance
Collection of Nicholas Lanier; probably acquired by Charles II. Listed in George III's 'Inventory A,' c.1800-20, p. 117, 'Paolo Farinati'.
