Paolo Farinati (1524-1606)
Perseus and Andromeda c.1575-1600
-
Adrawing of Andromeda chained to a rock, Perseus flying down to the left to attack the sea-monster. Popham (in P&W) noted a drawing of the same subject in the British Museum (1946,0713.25), a study for part of a wall decoration, for which there is a complete study in Dijon (inv. 790). An oil painting of the same subject, probably unrelated to these drawings, is in Palazzo Giuliari, Verona (see D. DeGrazia Bohlin, 'Paolo Farinati in the Palazzo Giuliari: Frescoes and Preparatory Drawings', Master Drawings, XX, 1983, pp. 347-69).
Farinati’s bold drawings were particularly admired by seventeenth century English collectors. The Royal Collection holds forty-seven sheets by Farinati and his followers. It is probable that most, if not all, were acquired during the reign of Charles II. A list of albums at Kensington Palace in 1727 includes one volume entirely of drawings by Farinati, in which this sheet was housed. The album contained RCINs 904973–905026, with other sheets by Farinati housed in a miscellaneous album. -
