A study for the head of St Jerome c. 1630-40
-
A study for the head of St Jerome, turned to the right in profil perdu; bearded and bald, with his neck and chest exposed.
This drawing is by the same hand as the portrait of Donna Olimpia Muti Caffarelli (RCIN 906350). Both are similar in style to the drawings of Orazio Gentileschi, and it is worth noting that Charles I owned a volume of drawings by this artist.
From the Sacchi volumesProvenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 106: as by Sacchi, 'Heads. A Figure in an Angle. And a Sketch')
