Jacopo Ligozzi (1547-1626)
A group of men, including three Roman soldiers 1575 - 1600
-
A composite drawing, on two fragmentary sheets irregularly joined: on the left, two Roman soldiers and two other men in conversation; on the right, a Roman soldier and another man. Inscribed below in an old hand, spanning the join, 'Jacomo Ligozza di Verona'.
Popham (in P&W): 'This is an unusual type of drawing for Ligozzi both in technique and in the handling, which is much bolder than usual, but the types and the general effect confirm the correctness of the old attribution to him.'Provenance
Presumably the sheet listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800-20, p. 85, ‘Scuola Veneziano’, no. 29, ‘Giacomo Ligozza di Verona’.
