The Three Fates and Mercury 1600-25
Pen and ink with grey wash and gold heightening, on paper with a green preparation. | 23.8 x 22.4 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 904799
-
A presentation drawing of the Three Fates, with Mercury flying above them. Inscribed at lower centre in a hand of the eighteenth century, ‘Del Palma’.
Stefania Mason Rinaldi (orally)connected the drawing with a painting of the same subject by Palma of around 1612, in a Swiss private collection (Art Vénitien en Suisse et au Liechtenstein, Musée d'Art et d'Histoire, Geneva, 1978). But the unusual technique, with gold highlights, makes clear that this is not a preparatory drawing but a finished sheet, for gift or sale.
Provenance
Listed in George III’s Inventory A, c.1800, p. 85, ‘Scuola Veneziano’, among ‘22 to 28. Giacomo Palma’.
