Madonna seated nursing the Christ Child 1560 - 1600
-
A drawing in pen, ink and wash, with white chalk heightening, of Madonna seated nursing the Christ Child, copied either from an engraving or woodcut after a lost Titian painting of the Rest on the Flight into Egypt. Sheet stamped in the lower right corner with a George V blind stamp.
This drawing shows the Madonna seated on the ground, resting Christ on her left knee. Above Christ’s shoulder is a small patch of foliage. In The Italian Drawings of the XV and XVI Centuries at Windsor Castle (1949) Popham and Wilde suggest that the drawing was a copied either from a woodcut attributed to Niccolo Boldrini (British Museum inv. no 1935.7.13.3), or from an engraving taken from the woodcut by Giulio Bonasone (Catelli Isola, 1976, p.31). The drawing is closer in style to the engraving, the sharp profile of the Madonna is present in both.
In Titian and his Drawings, Harold E. Wethey proposes that the date of the drawing could be as late as the seventeenth century. Wethey also provides an overview of several engravings based on the lost Titian painting, and proposes that the painting from which they were copied was produced late in Titian’s career, around 1560 (Wethey, Titian and his Drawings, 1987, cat X-26).Provenance
Royal Collection by c. 1810; listed in George III's 'Inventory A,' c. 1800-20, p.85: ‘17 to 21. ....Ditto [Paolo Cagliari detto Paolo Veronese]’
