Pomponio Amalteo (1505-88)
The Supper at Emmaus c.1540-50
-
A drawing in a long low lunette of the Supper at Emmaus, Christ seated centre at a table, two Disciples either side; servants entering at left with meat and at right with fruit, two serving women lower left, and a landscape to the right. Popham (in P&W) had tentatively followed the old ascription to Pordenone; the drawing was definitively attributed to Amalteo by C.E. Cohen ('Drawings by Pomponio Amalteo', Master Drawings, XI, 1973, pp. 239-67), dating the drawing (p. 261) to the 1540s.
Inscribed in pen, lower left, 'Bordenone'. -
