The head of a man 1500-50
-
A drawing of the bust of a man in large headgear, looking up to the left.
Popham (in P&W): 'The suggestion of Adolfo Venturi [note formerly on mount] that it is the work of Romanino hardly seems possible. The style rather recalls that of Bocaccio Bocaccino at Cremona. It must be a XVI century copy or reconstruction of an earlier portrait, perhaps intended for insertion in a commemorative painting.' In his review of P&W, C.L. Ragghianti suggested an attribution to Melone ('Biblioteca', Critica d'Arte, I, 1954, p. 595), which Popham tentatively accepted (in B(M)).
Provenance
Presumably in the Royal Collection by 1800, but not identifiable in George III's Inventory A.
