A drawing of Jonah, full length, seated on the right in profile, on a boulder under a tree. His hands are clasped and his left foot rests on a stone. In the left background there is a river with a whale spewing him forth. The city of Nineveh can be seen in the distance. Inscribed below: . IONAS . 9. This drawing is from a series of thirty four scenes from the Old Testament which, with the exception of RCIN 904742, served as preparatory drawings for 33 of the 39 engravings in reverse by Johannes Sadeler the Elder (Hollstein , XXI, pp.96-7, nos.72-110), designed to illustrate L.Hillesemius, Sacrarum Antiquitatum (Antwerp, 1577).
