Mattathias 1575
Pen and black ink with grey wash; indented for transfer | 12.0 x 8.1 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 904735
-
A drawing of Mattathias standing, full length, in a landscape. He is dressed as a priest with his right arm raised and a sword held up in his left hand; behind him two sleeping or slain men are stretched out on the ground. This presumably illustrates the incident at Modein when Mattathias, having refused to participate in a pagan sacrifice, slew first a fellow countryman who was about to take part, and then the king's commissioner. Inscribed below: MATATHIAS, and lower left: 33. (?). This drawing is from a series of thirty four scenes from the Old Testament which, with the exception of RCIN 904742, served as preparatory drawings for 33 of the 39 engravings in reverse by Johannes Sadeler the Elder (Hollstein , XXI, pp.96-7, nos.72-110), designed to illustrate L.Hillesemius, Sacrarum Antiquitatum (Antwerp, 1577).
