A drawing of Gideon kneeling in profile, full length, in a landscape with a town in the background; his hands are held together in supplication; he wears armour, a plumed helmet, and a large sword; on the rocky bank to the right lies the outstretched fleece of a sheep; Gideon is shown asking for a sign from God that he will lead the Israelites to victory. Inscribed below: . GEDEON . ,and there are traces of a cut inscription, lower left. This drawing is from a series of thirty four scenes from the Old Testament which, with the exception of RCIN 904742, served as preparatory drawings for 33 of the 39 engravings in reverse by Johannes Sadeler the Elder (Hollstein , XXI, pp.96-7, nos.72-110), designed to illustrate L.Hillesemius, Sacrarum Antiquitatum (Antwerp, 1577).
