A drawing of Moses standing behind the Tables of the Law; in the left background, the Adoration of the Golden Calf, and in the right, God hidden by a thick cloud of smoke and heralded by trumpets, appears to Moses on Mount Sinai, with the children of Israel below. Signed in the lower right corner: CVDB (mongram with a reversed D); there are traces of a cut inscription, lower left. This drawing is from a series of thirty four scenes from the Old Testament which, with the exception of RCIN 904742, served as preparatory drawings for 33 of the 39 engravings in reverse by Johannes Sadeler the Elder (Hollstein , XXI, pp.96-7, nos.72-110), designed to illustrate L.Hillesemius, Sacrarum Antiquitatum (Antwerp 1577).
