A drawing of Abraham standing full length in a landscape with his right hand resting on the head of the kneeling, semi-naked Isaac. In his raised left hand a sword is seized by an angel descending from the right; behind, between the figures, a ram is caught in a thicket. In the left foreground is a woodpile and burning oil. Signed on a pot in the lower left corner: CVDB (mongram with a reversed D). This drawing is from a series of thirty four scenes from the Old Testament which, with the exception of RCIN 904742, served as preparatory drawings for 33 of the 39 engravings in reverse by Johannes Sadeler the Elder (Hollstein , XXI, pp.96-7, nos.72-110), designed to illustrate L.Hillesemius, Sacrarum Antiquitatum (Antwerp 1577).
