A drawing of St Lawrence tethered to a post, with two men brandishing scourges on the left and an angel administering on the right. A dismayed-looking soldier kneels in the right foreground. The Roman prefect gives directions from his elevated place in the background. This is one of seven known studies preparatory to a series of fourteen paintings on the subject of the Life of St Lawrence for the church of S Lorenzo in Piscibus, now in the Calasanctianum, Rome. See also RCIN 904544, 904545, 904547.
