Recto: a drawing of a group of saints, including St Peter in the centre and St John at his feet, borne upon clouds. Verso: five figures, one of whom is crowned, hovering on a cloud over a river. Inscribed (verso): Di Ciro Ferri. The recto is a study for the dome of St Agnese a Piazza Navona, Rome, begun in 1670, and left unfinished at the artist's death. This drawing was formerly placed with the Cortona volumes
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani: first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1810 (Inv. A, p. 111: 'Saints in Glory, on one side, & four Figures descending in a Cloud on the other side')
