Tullia driving her chariot over the body of her father
-
A drawing of Tullia in her chariot as her horses rear over the body of her father lying beneath them. Probably a study for a painting by Baldini in Opocno, Czech Republic.
Tullia was the last queen of Rome, the younger daughter of Rome's sixth king, Servius Tullius. She married Lucius Tarquinius (Tarquin) and along with her husband, arranged the overthrow and murder of her father, securing the throne for her husband.
A schematic copy of the drawing is in Düsseldorf, KA(FP)7082. Another copy was at auction at Koller, Zürich, 18 Sept 2015, lot 3403. A pendant painting attrib. Baldini of Horatius stabbing his sister is also in Opocno, for which there is a preparatory study in the British Museum, 1847,0306.9Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 111: as amongst drawings by Pietro da Cortona and Ciro Ferri, 'Tullia the wife of Tarquin driving her Chariot over her Father')
