The Conversion of St Paul c.1650-1700
-
A drawing of the dramatic moment of St Paul's conversion; he lies on his back in the foreground with his arms raised towards the vision of Jesus appearing in the sky above him. On the left, soldiers on rearing mounts watch in amazement.
Catalogued by Blunt as Pietro da Cortona, but the style, technique and figure types support an attribution to Cortona's pupil Lazzaro Baldi. The figure of St Paul recurs in almost identical form in an altarpiece in S Giovanni Battista, Velletri, formerly ascribed to Cortona but now thought to be by Baldi.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 111: 'The Conversion of St.Paul')
