Ciro Ferri (1634-89)
Urban VIII protecting Rome from plague and famine c.1683
-
A drawing of a scene in which Urban VIII and his attendants are confronted by a kneeling supplicant who gestures towards a scene of violence and strife on the right. The pope looks up towards St Peter and St Paul who look down at him from their seat in the clouds above. This is a study for a painting on paper in a room in the Palazzo Barberini, probably intended as a cartoon for a tapestry and later used as a wall decoration.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani
