Pietro da Cortona (Cortona 1596-Rome 1669)
Tancred wounded c. 1625-30
-
A drawing of soldiers and other figures standing over Tancred, who lies wounded with Erminia kneeling beside him. This is a study for the whole composition of the painting in the Briganti Collection, Rome. Certain figures recur almost identically; the man leaning over the wounded Tancred, and the two soldiers on the extreme left.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 113: 'The body of a dead Prince discover'd by the rest of the Army his wife and friends')
