A sacrifice c. 1635-50
-
A drawing of a Roman priest standing beside an altar, about to pour a libation. A soldier and other figures kneel before the altar, and above Fame and a putto carry a coat of arms surmounted by a coronet (? ducal). A radiant sun appears on the altar and elsewhere in the design, and bees appear at several points.
The bees and the sun, which are much used as a decorative motif on the Palazzo Barberini, indicate a connection with that family. This connection is confirmed by the style of the drawing, which suggests a classical member of the Barberini group, familiar with the early work of Cortona. Probably by the same hand as RCIN 990118. This is possibly a design for the title-page of a book.Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 113: from a volume containing drawings by 'P Cortona, Ciro Ferri, Romanelli, Salvator Rosa &ca'; 'A Sacrifice & emblematical above for a Coat of Arms')
