The Sacrifice of Isaac c.1650-80
-
A drawing of Abraham with his left hand on his son's head and with a knife in his right hand, raised and held back by the angel. Originally catalogued as an early work by Pietro da Cortona, this seems rather to be by one of his followers; attributed to the Perugian artist Paolo Gismondi by V. Casale, 'Alcune precisazioni sui disegni di Lazzaro Baldi', Prospettiva 33-36, 1983-4, pp. 262-75, p. 272 n.7.
Provenance
Probably acquired by George III in 1762 as part of the collection of Cardinal Alessandro Albani; first recorded in a Royal Collection inventory of c.1800-1820 (Inv. A, p. 113: 'Abraham and Isaac')
